NEN 2484 & NEN-EN 1004 Inspector

The e-learning course “Inspecting ladders, steps and mobile access towers in accordance with NEN 2484 and NEN-EN 1004” focuses on the safe and competent inspection of this work equipment. You will learn how to carry out visual and functional inspections, what to look for in terms of wear or defects, and how to record the inspection correctly. This enables you to responsibly approve or reject ladders, steps and mobile access towers, ensuring user safety is always safeguarded.

After completing this inspector training, you will be able to carry out inspections independently on climbing equipment such as ladders, steps and mobile access towers. Inspecting climbing equipment has been a legal requirement since 1998. The VCA checklist also includes the annual inspection requirement for climbing equipment. Inspections of ladders, steps and mobile access towers can be carried out in-house or outsourced

Certificate validity period

The “Inspecting ladders, steps and mobile access towers in accordance with NEN 2484” certificate does not state an expiry date, as this is not legally required. Inspections must be carried out by a “competent natural person, legal entity, or institution” (Article 7.4a, paragraph 5).

An inspector is responsible for keeping their own competence up to date, for example by monitoring updates via www.nen.nl or www.arboportaal.nl (the Ministry’s website). A refresher course may be considered one way to maintain knowledge and competence, but it is not legally mandatory.

Note: Some training providers still refer to inspection according to NEN 2817. However, this standard was withdrawn in 2006 and replaced by NEN-EN 1004.
